Job Description

VOLUNTEER ESOL TEACHERS REQUIRED
Ref: TBI/ESOL
Birmingham Office

The Big Issue Foundation is a national charity which connects vendors with the vital support and solutions that enable them to rebuild their lives and journey away from homelessness.

For many homeless people, selling The Big Issue is the first step to gain or regain control of their lives. The Big Issue Foundation helps vendors to access support services they need, including housing, employment, health, finance, education and training. By volunteering as an ESOL teacher, you will be giving these vulnerably housed people the fundamental tools in order to earn an income and escape homelessness!

We are looking for ESOL volunteer teachers to run classes in the Birmingham office for vendors. This service will empower vendors and help them to access services and opportunities to improve their quality of life by developing their language and communication skills and building their confidence in both verbal and written English.

You will also work alongside staff to help plan and prepare lessons which cater for the varying need and abilities, create a comfortable atmosphere which will encourage and motivate vendors to maximise their learning and build confidence and work with vendors individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as discussions and demonstrations.
To be successful for these exciting opportunities, you must be a qualified ESOL teacher, be enthusiastic and passionate about teaching English, have excellent communication skills and be patient, flexible and creative in your teaching style.
Ideally volunteers will be able to commit to at least a couple of hours per week, and we will pay for travel expenses to and from the workplace, and a contribution towards lunch expenses, as long as tickets and receipts are provided.
